Although the film is about aliens and first contact, it's also about making films music. John William's mellifluous leitmotif drives the entire picture. In fact those five notes, play a substantial function in the movie's final half hour, when the military makes contact with the aliens. The score itself has three unique acts, as it were. The very first is a series of dissonant sounds and atonal passages that mean the alien existence. Next is a more volatile sequence which alternates between restraint and full out action. The last part consists of variations of the leitmotif.
